Ten suns in the sky
Long ago, ten suns rose together. Rivers dried up, crops burned and the ground cracked open. The people begged heaven for help.
The archer who shot the suns
Hou Yi, the greatest archer under heaven, climbed the highest peak and drew his bow. One arrow at a time, nine suns went out. A single sun was left to rise each morning, and the world could breathe again.
A gift of immortality
The Queen Mother of the West rewarded Hou Yi with an elixir of immortality. One pill would lift a single person into the heavens. Hou Yi could not bear to leave his wife Chang’e, so he asked her to keep it safe.
Chang’e flies to the moon
One day, while Hou Yi was away, the villain Feng Meng broke in and demanded the elixir. To keep it out of his hands, Chang’e swallowed the pill herself. Her feet left the floor, and she drifted up past the clouds toward the moon.
The Palace of Vast Cold
Chang’e made her home on the moon, with the Jade Rabbit for company. Down on earth, Hou Yi looked up and missed her. On the fifteenth night of the eighth lunar month, he laid out her favourite mooncakes and fruit beneath the full moon. Families have gathered on this night ever since.
Tonight, the Jade Rabbit needs your help to bring them together.
